Southwest Boogie: a tribute to nightclub culture on the Waterfront

By Adrian Loving

This box design pays homage to the illustrious history of nightclubs that populated M Street’s SW/SE corridor between the golden years of the early 1970s through the early 2000s. These are clubs that I frequented as a young person in college, and afterward, that was a defining moment in time and influential in my club culture history as a developing DJ. These clubs no longer exist as SW/SE has changed dramatically with the development of Navy Yard and the Waterfront. These clubs were also inclusive of various ages, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations. They boasted world-class celebrities, talent, bands, and DJs such as Chuck Brown, Larry Levan, Jamiroquai, Loose Ends, Jill Scott, Mayor Marion Barry, Muhammad Ali, and so many more.
