Southwest DC History
Perfectly positioned just south of the National Mall and bordered by the Washington Channel and South Capitol Street, Southwest DC is home to world-class museums, The Wharf, federal offices, performance venues, local purveyors, and award-winning restaurants. A proud, tightknit, diverse neighborhood is the heart of this unique community, and we’re grateful to be a part of it.
Explore Our HistoryWhat’s a BID?
A Business Improvement District or BID is a non-profit special district financing tool used to help stakeholders, like neighbors and business owners collectively plan, fund, and implement services and improvements to their community. BIDs are funded through a self-imposed assessment of commercial property owners within the community.

As the Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID), we’re change-makers guided by an essential truth: people make places and places make people. We understand that the true source of collective prosperity is an empowered community that nurtures and centers neighborhood voices. Which, in turn, inspires and instills people with their own agency.
In all of our initiatives — from providing trusted, daily support, food distribution, mobility solutions, enhancing parks, and connecting people to resources to street cleaning, events, and adapting in real-time to the community’s evolving needs — we honor our essential connections — co-creating a healthy, prosperous Southwest for all.
