    The Southwest Peace Gardens transform centrally located community spaces into flower and herb gardens with art and enhanced public amenities. These gardens were created with the intention of preventing gun violence in our community, thanks to the Building Blocks DC (BBDC) grant program, an innovative community-based approach to curbing violence throughout the District of Columbia by directing resources and services to the people most at risk of committing violence and the places most prone to violent occurrences.

    The Randall Recreation Center is a recreation facility that has outdoor sports amenities, including outdoor fields, a large multi-purpose room, a playground with AstroTurf, an outdoor pool, and sports facilities.

Beyond its picturesque beauty, Amidon Field serves as a vibrant hub for community gatherings, from family picnics and playful children’s activities to friendly baseball, soccer, and basketball games.

Community Murals and
Dialogue Through Art

Local artist Rose Jaffe received a grant from The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) to paint this mural adjacent to the Peace Garden at Syphax. To inspire young residents in STEM/STEAM academics, the artwork depicts the connection between micro and macro elements of our world — from gardens and soil to space. The artwork also serves as a reminder of Black women’s larger-than-life impact and features Jeanette J. Epps, a NASA astronaut and member of the first operational crewed flight to the International Space Station.
